She keeps her window open anytime she's home.

Saffron doesn't care that it's getting colder; she's got sweaters, she can put them on. But ever since Halloween night, when she saw him in that alleyway and he ran - or rather jumped - away from her, she's been leaving the window open for Kaine, a sign that he's welcome to come to her anytime.

She still looks, searches the streets, but she hasn't seen him. She knows full well that if he wants to remain unfound he probably can pull that off. Or maybe someone else has succeeded where she failed, she doesn't know. Maybe someone else is taking care of him and he just hasn't had the time to come and see her. Saffron pushes down the hurt she feels whenever that possibility crosses her mind.

It's early evening now, and the oven is providing some extra warmth to combat the chill from the open window. There's a finished pie sitting out on a rack to cool and another still baking, and Saffron is curled up on the couch in a fluffy sweater and jeans, sipping a cup of tea and reading a book.

The first day had been hell, and it's only gotten worse from there.

The city they're in is like Darrow, but not the Darrow they know. This one is mostly deserted, decaying, ash falling from the sky. Saffron and Russell stay on the move, making sure they can get to shelter when the sirens go off to signal the darkness and the monsters. She doesn't want to go home, to the apartment building they both live in. She doesn't want to see it in ruin, doesn't want to see their home crumbling and have that connection in her mind if they ever get out of this.

But then, who knows if they'll ever get out of this.

In the daytime, or what grayness passes for day, they've got Reavers to contend with. Both of them are armed to the teeth, and they stop by the police station or sometimes a gun shop when they can to reload and replace as needed. Saffron's acquired one of the Reaver's axes, and it hangs from her belt as they roam the streets, wondering if they'll run into anyone they know.

[It can be assumed Russell is there, though he is available to be part of the thread (as a 3-way) upon request. The timing can be left vague, anytime during the dates above, but feel free to specify if you want]

It's taken a couple weeks, but Saffron's managed to get him to agree to a day for dinner, take two. The first time was last weekend, but the Scarlet Spider never made an appearance. She'd been frustrated, but unsurprised, and had ended the night by polishing off a bottle of wine and hoping he'd done a number on some unsuspecting muggers or rescued children from a burning building or something worthwhile while he was standing her up. A couple days later she'd seen him, and had told him in no uncertain terms he'd better show up this time. He hadn't seemed all that fazed by her no nonsense tone...not that she'd expected him to be.

So tonight, she's telling herself that if he doesn't show again, she won't be disappointed. She's got a new bottle of wine, she's made an absolutely delicious dinner and there's a pie baking in the oven, and if that houzi de pigu of a Scarlet Spider doesn't want to show up, it's his loss.

She's dressed simply, just a long green dress that shows off her figure nicely, her feet bare as she deliberately walks right past the open living room window on her way into the kitchen. Who knows, maybe he'll surprise her and knock on the actual door.

When Saffron invited him to come by for dinner, she was half expecting him not to show. But then he does, and she's more than a little pleased, in small part because she's put a lot of effort into the meal she's cooked, but mainly because he intrigues her, and she wants to see more of him.

Dinner goes surprisingly well, things more at ease once she lets him in on the fact that she knows who he is, so he might as well take the mask off. He's a smartass, but she can deal with that just fine, and anyway, she's always been more drawn to a man who's gruff.

Standing, she moves to clear away the dishes, intending to leave them for later since her current company's much more interesting than washing them. "More wine?" she asks as she takes his plate.
